No More Dirty Looks

So I’ve been washing my face with coconut oil. Yep, that’s right: washing my face with oil. Da Capo Lifelong has just published a very informative look at the cosmetics industry called No More Dirty Looks: The Truth About Your Beauty Products — and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics. The authors, both originally from Montreal, convinced me on the “art of double cleansing.” Choose an organic oil that you like (I chose virgin, cold-pressed coconut), pour a small amount into your dry hand and massage into your face, adding steam or a hot cloth on the face if you’re “feeling rich.” Then rinse off the residue with your natural, non-irritating cleanser and voila — balanced skin. For someone who spent most of her teenage years slathering Oxy10 on her face (which has since been banned in Europe as a possible carcinogen — great) and thinking that burning feeling meant it was working, massaging oil into my face seems counterintuitive at first, but having had  few facials at Pure + Simple in Toronto, (and proofing Kristen Ma’s book Beauty Pure + Simple) I’ve learned to appreciate natural oils on my (ahem) gently aging skin.

Authors Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt were on the cover of Montreal’s Mirror this week and the feature article includes info on where to find some of the products they recommend in Canada.
